Finding Derry Township Resident Records
Derry Township is the Hershey-area township in Dauphin County, not an incorporated city or the county seat. That split matters. The Township of Derry keeps records it creates, such as planning, permit, policy, and certain police-recording material. Dauphin County holds the assessment, recorder, court, election, marriage, and estate channels. Pennsylvania agencies hold statewide voter status and vital-record routes. A result from one system should answer only the question that system is built to answer.
Start with an address when land is involved. Start with a full name and a known county when the question is a court filing. For an older family or a past address, use a date and locality before opening archival records. A property record may show an owner or mailing address, but it does not identify every person at a location. That distinction keeps a Derry Township residents directory search grounded in the actual record.
- Use Dauphin County Property Tax Inquiry with an address, parcel number, or the listed owner name.
- Confirm the municipality as Derry Township and save the parcel identifier, site address, deed reference, and relevant sale date.
- Search the Recorder index with a party name, UPI, date range, document type, or municipality/comments field.
- For a defined township record, request the existing record through the Township's Right-to-Know channel rather than asking for a created list.
- Move older questions to the State Archives, Hershey History Center, or the Register of Wills when the record type and era fit their holdings.
Derry Township Records Offices
Four offices form the practical starting desk for Derry Township resident records. The Recorder connects people and parcels through recorded instruments. Tax Assessment provides the current property-card layer. Registration and Elections handles voter-registration administration, while the Township Open Records Officer receives requests for existing municipal records. Their records overlap in names and addresses, but their duties do not. Choose the custodian before submitting a request.

Derry Township Property Search Fields
Dauphin County Property Tax Inquiry is the local address-to-parcel route. It requires at least one search criterion. A parcel number may be entered with or without dashes. For a street search, use the house number and street name without a direction or suffix when the simple form calls for it. The municipality menu supplies the important narrowing step, choose 24 - DERRY TWP. Owner name, sale date, neighborhood, construction year, building size, building type, and property class are additional filters, not proof of present household membership.
| County field | How it narrows a Derry Township search | Recorded limit |
|---|---|---|
| Parcel Number | Finds one identified parcel, with or without dashes. | One criterion is required. |
| Owner Name | Use the last name as printed on the tax bill. | It is a property relationship, not a resident roll. |
| House Number and Street Name | Builds an address search without a ZIP filter. | Omit directional and suffix in the simple search. |
| Townships/Municipalities | Select 24 - DERRY TWP to avoid nearby results. | Postal city is not the jurisdiction field. |
| Neighborhood | Can refine results within named county categories. | Neighborhood labels are not municipal boundaries. |
See the County property-search screen used for Derry Township residents directory research.
The form's owner, address, parcel, municipality, and property filters make it a useful first record, then the parcel identifier can carry the search to mapping and recorded documents.
Derry Township Parcel Terms
A Derry Township property card shows several address-like fields that should not be collapsed into one claim. The county's own sample parcel layout separates owner name and address, mailing name and address, site address, township, sales history, assessment values, and related names. It can also show tax status, map access, land and structure data, and a deed reference. Corporate ownership, trusts, vacant property, or a mailing address elsewhere are all reasons to avoid treating any single field as an occupancy list.
- Parcel
- A county-defined property unit used in assessment and mapping records.
- Situs address
- The physical location of the parcel.
- Mailing address
- The address used for assessment correspondence, which can differ from the site.
- UPI
- A Uniform Parcel Identifier that can help connect a county property record to a Recorder search.
- Index
- A searchable guide to a record, not always the document image or a certified copy.
For a named road and its parcel trail, the address-first approach is developed further in the Derry Township street directory.
Derry Township Recorder Index
The Dauphin County Recorder of Deeds uses AcclaimWeb for its public index after a user accepts the portal conditions. Its modes include Simple Search, Name, Instrument Number, Document Type, Book/Page, Record Date, Consideration, UPI Number, Municipality/Comments, and Alpha Index. A name search expects the surname first in Last,First form and requires at least three characters. Municipality/Comments can help narrow a Derry Township document set, while the UPI can bridge from a parcel card.
The Recorder reports deeds and miscellaneous documents from 1785 forward and mortgages from 1979 forward. The public index identifies record trails, but an older record may still require the courthouse counter or Alpha Index. The County's newer Recorder notice also describes an email Record Notification Service for a name, property, or parcel. It is an alert for later recordings, not title monitoring or proof that a claim is correct.
Open the Dauphin County Recorder public-search home for the Derry Township residents directory document path.
Search modes are separated by the record key already in hand, making a parcel, party name, instrument number, or date range more useful than a broad guess.
Derry Township Postal Names
Hershey is the strongest local postal identity, but it is not the whole records jurisdiction. Township materials recognize the 17033, 17036, and 17078 postal overlays, associated with Hershey, Hummelstown, and Palmyra. Each can cross a municipal boundary. A Hershey mailing label can also reach beyond Derry Township. Confirm the municipality on the Dauphin County parcel record before choosing an office or treating a ZIP as a Derry Township boundary.
This three-name pattern explains many false starts in a Derry Township directory search. Postal delivery answers where mail goes. The parcel municipality answers which local government and county record route applies.
Note: The County Property Tax Inquiry has address and municipality fields, but its documented form does not offer a ZIP filter.
Derry Township Current Resident Sources
No single public roster identifies all current Derry Township residents. Instead, each current directory-like source has a narrow purpose. Property inquiry lists parcel relationships. The voter-status tool is for an individual's registration status and polling-place information. Recorder results list parties to documents. Staff directories list public work contacts, not private addresses. Treat a no-hit in one place as a reason to use the right next custodian, not as a conclusion about a person.
| Derry Township source | What it can show | Custodian | Access boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Property Tax Inquiry | Listed owner, mailing and site address, parcel and deed reference. | Dauphin Tax Assessment | Public property record, not household proof. |
| Voter status | An individual's registration status and polling-place route. | Pennsylvania / County elections | Not a public street-browsing directory. |
| Recorder index | Parties, document type, date, UPI, and related document keys. | Dauphin Recorder | Recorded-document trail. |
| School staff directory | Official public school contacts by name, location, and role. | Derry Township School District | Work-contact directory only. |
| Institutional directories | Limited public contact information where a person permits display. | Institutional custodian | Not a general resident index. |
A commercial people-search category may mix old and current records without preserving their source limits. Official records are narrower, but they identify the custodian, the record date, and the kind of relationship being shown.
| Official record route | Mixed-source people finder category |
|---|---|
| Names the office, record type, and record date. | May combine sources with different update dates and purposes. |
| Supports direct confirmation with the custodian. | Can confuse ownership, past address, and current residence. |
| Has access rules specific to the record. | Does not expand what the underlying record lawfully establishes. |
Derry Township Voter Lookup Limits
Pennsylvania Find Voter Registration Status is the official personal status and polling-place route. It is not a web-by-street directory. A voter can also seek help through Dauphin County Registration and Elections or 1-877-VOTESPA. The State's accessible wrapper did not expose the live form's individual labels in the research review, so no unverified field list belongs here.
Pennsylvania law makes some registration material inspectable, but 25 Pa.C.S. §§ 1207 and 1404 set controls. Digital signatures and SURE registration numbers are excluded. A person seeking a public information list, street list, walking list, or full export must provide identification and a written permitted-use affirmation. Those records cannot be repurposed as an unrestricted Derry Township residents directory.
View the official voter registration status screen for the personal lookup route.
The state tool belongs to individual registration confirmation, while controlled voter-list requests follow a separate statutory process.
Derry Township Court Docket Routes
Derry Township lies in Dauphin County's 12th Judicial District. The statewide UJS Case Search provides free public docket sheets for Magisterial District, Common Pleas, and appellate matters. Search with a full name, then compare county, filing date, court office, and available case details before treating a docket as a match. A docket sheet reports actions and filings, not a universal person locator.
Dauphin civil cases use the Prothonotary's civil search and office. Criminal records use the separately elected Clerk of Courts. UJS web results exclude juvenile, expunged, limited-access, and some civil material. A Derry Township no-hit therefore does not establish that no case exists. Underlying documents and certified copies may require the correct court office, and the County Prothonotary has warned that some material may be unavailable online during its case-management transition.
Open Pennsylvania UJS Case Search to review the public docket-search interface.
The advanced form's county, judicial-district, participant, and filing-date controls help separate same-name results without changing the limits on public access.
Derry Township Vital Record Paths
Vital records do not share the Recorder or court search route. The County Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court holds marriage licenses from 1885 forward, estate and Orphans' Court records from the late 1700s, inheritance dockets from 1917, and historical Dauphin birth and death records for 1893 through 1906. Its Cloud Search Public Access route supports public estate, marriage, and Orphans' Court material under the office's access conditions.
For Derry Township birth and death certificates from 1906 forward, use the Department of Health. Contemporary certified records have eligibility controls. Its genealogical policy opens noncertified birth records 105 years after birth and death records 50 years after death. A marriage record remains a county record, while a divorce is a court-file question. The year and event type decide the office.
Use the Pennsylvania Vital Records page for the official Department of Health ordering and application path.
The Commonwealth page supports the state certificate route, while older local events and marriage records lead back to the Dauphin County custodian.
Derry Township Local History Records
The Hershey Public Library's Pennsylvania Collection in the Hershey Room focuses on Derry Township and Dauphin County history. It is a useful first contact for a road, surname, yearbook, phone book, or local map, but its public website does not publish a complete Derry or Hershey city-directory shelf by publisher and year. Ask reference staff to check the catalog and local collection rather than assuming that a missing online search is a missing record.
For deeper Derry Township local work, Hershey History Center maintains appointment-based resources including deeds, maps, local newspapers, cemetery markers, family files, obituaries, oral histories, yearbooks, and photographs. Hershey Community Archives adds corporate, local business, organization, photo, and chronology material. The Historical Society of Dauphin County adds church records, surname folders, yearbooks, historical clippings, and the 1893-1906 birth registry. The historical holdings are covered in greater depth in the Derry Township city directory.
See the Hershey Public Library history page that identifies the Pennsylvania Collection's local focus.
The library is a local-history access point, not a claim that every Derry Township household appears in an online city directory.
Derry Township Records Requests
When a needed Township record is not posted, the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law, Act 3 of 2008, 65 P.S. §§ 67.101-67.3104, provides the request route for existing agency records. A request should identify the requester and be specific enough to find the record, such as an address, permit number, meeting date, or date range. The law does not require Derry Township to create a resident list, conduct research, answer questions, or release information another law protects.
The Township's initial response is generally due within five business days. A valid interim response can extend the final response by up to 30 calendar days under defined conditions. Pennsylvania's statewide fee schedule permits electronic delivery without an added fee and limits routine black-and-white copies to the published schedule. Community Development has no reviewed public Derry Township permit database, so a defined address and date range is more useful than a broad request. Use the current Township schedule for local administrative or specialized charges rather than assuming one price fits every record.
Visit the Derry Township Right-to-Know page for its officer, request forms, policy, fee schedule, Act 22 form, and police-recording route.
Its separate forms reflect a key local boundary: a normal RTKL request and a police-recording request do not follow the same channel.
Derry Township Privacy Boundaries
Public availability has real limits. Pennsylvania's Address Confidentiality Program permits eligible victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, or child abduction to use a substitute mailing address across listed government and private-record settings. That can make a Derry Township official address incomplete by design. Recorded documents are generally public except DD214 military discharge papers, but public does not mean that sensitive details should be republished or that a custodian's data should be treated as a personal profile.
Judicial records can be sealed, juvenile, expunged, or limited access. Driver data is not a Derry Township resident-search channel. If a record needs correction or redaction review, contact the office that holds it rather than trying to infer or work around protected information.
Derry Township State Search Checks
Two Commonwealth sources can help answer narrow Derry Township questions without becoming an address directory. PALS offers Person, Facility, Disciplinary, and Provider searches for public Pennsylvania professional-license information. It can verify a current credential or public disciplinary information, but a license record does not establish a person's home location or identity without stable matching details. State guidance warns that license data can take up to 48 hours to update.
Open the Pennsylvania Licensing System to choose the appropriate search category.
The screen separates person, facility, disciplinary, and provider checks, which helps keep a credential question separate from a residence claim.
Pennsylvania Treasury's unclaimed-property search is a claimant-oriented name or company search. It requires a company or last name, accepts an optional first name, and requires documentation to complete a claim. Treasury does not make underlying claimant information public to third-party finders and says it does not send unsolicited text messages about its programs.
Use the Pennsylvania Treasury unclaimed-property search to check a claim directly.
A match is a lead for the potential owner to verify, not evidence of current address, identity, or entitlement.
Historical Derry Township Directory Trails
Derry Township has a stronger documented historical trail than a single verified local city-directory run. Pennsylvania State Archives identifies Derry Township tax assessment records from 1901 through 1952, with specific freeholder, tenant, and annual-occupation roll series. Those distinctions matter. A name on a freeholder list is not the same thing as a tenant or annual-occupation entry, and none automatically supplies a complete household census.
The record sequence reaches farther back through Dauphin County. Derry was incorporated in 1729 within Lancaster County for tax purposes, and part of the area joined Dauphin County in 1785. The Recorder reports records beginning in 1785. State Archives microfilm includes county deed books for 1820-1866 and grantor/grantee indexes for 1820-1950, useful when a web index does not reach the needed format. For a historical address, use parcel and deed references together with the dated assessment roll and local archival materials.
The Hershey History Center's April 2025 guide gives the local record trail unusual depth: 243 deeds and related instruments, more than 490 family files, 95 maps, about 40,000 obituary clippings, 200 or more oral histories, and 145 scrapbooks or photo albums. Those collections can corroborate an address, family, organization, or community event without pretending that a modern directory is a complete archive.
Note: For pre-1785 Derry material, search plans should account for the earlier Lancaster County tax jurisdiction before treating a Dauphin no-hit as final.
